Scalp acne is a fairly common condition which can affect both men and women of all ages. Although it mostly appears on the scalp, it can also affect other parts of the body such as the face, arms, armpits, chest and legs. Scalp acne usually manifests itself as small white and yellow pustules.

Scalp acne can be triggered by overly productive oil glands which mix with dirt resulting in a clogged pore. Once the pore is blocked, bacteria will then cause the pimple to erupt.
Certain hair care products which contain excessive amounts of oil can also aggravate or worsen the condition. Stress is also thought to be a contributing factor in scalp acne appearance.

For those who are stricken with scalp acne, there are treatments available which you may discuss with your dermatologist. He may suggest a scalp acne treatment which contains salicylic acid. This scalp acne treatment would be applied with either a cotton ball or a cotton swab. Since this scalp acne treatment can cause the treated area to become excessively dry, so it is advised that it be used only on the affected area.

Other statements

Before beginning the salicylic acid treatment, the scalp must first be cleansed with a non-irritating shampoo. Individuals with severe cases of scalp acne should never try to treat the condition themselves, but rather they should consult the services of a qualified dermatologist.

If you intend on using scalp acne treatments on your own, be sure that you do not use benzoyl peroxide as a treatment on the scalp as it is a bleaching agent. It will cause the hair it touches to bleach out its color, which could cause you to have results that you will find unpleasant at best. Some dandruff shampoos contain a chemical called ketoconazole which can be used as an effective scalp acne treatment. Always be sure to use a good shampoo and conditioner before the treatments to insure a healthy head of hair.

Home treatments for scalp acne should only be attempted in mild cases. Always consult either your primary physician or your dermatologist when you have scalp acne which is moderate to severe. Your physician may be able to prescribe a medication which will offer some relief with the more serious outbreaks. You may get a prescription for an oral antibiotic such as erythromycin or tetracycline, or a topical antibiotic to treat the skin for infections which make the scalp acne thrive. Or you may be prescribed a topical steroid to treat the outbreak of scalp acne.

If you have never been diagnosed by a proper medical practitioner as to having scalp acne, do not attempt any treatments of any type until you have been seen. It is of the utmost importance that a proper diagnosis be made before any scalp acne treatments have been utilized. Other scalp conditions exist, and you could potentially make them worse with the improper treatment. If you do not have a regular dermatologist, your physician can refer you to one to get help with your scalp condition. It is only then that any scalp treatments for acne should begin.
